Who Killed the Prosecutor and Why? 1972

On a sunlit beach, a young photographer named Carlo Lou Castel wraps a photoshoot with his model girlfriend Olga Beba Lončar and the pair share a quiet moment before they move on with their day. Not far away, a grim scene unfolds: two men haul a murdered man to a car, bump the vehicle, and set it on fire to stage the death as an accidental crash. Carlo and Olga witness the whole brutal act, Carlo documenting every crucial beat with his camera, catching the flicker of fear and the precision of the staging in frame after frame.

The victim is Giuseppe Anchisi, a high-ranking prosecutor, and the case pulls the string of a larger, murkier conspiracy. Inspector Vezzi [Adolfo Celi] is under mounting pressure to crack the mystery, and he tries to keep the press at bay by steering the narrative with a lie that the mob is the suspect. Carlo brings the photographs to his boss, Ivan Smirkov—better known as “Uncle Fifi” [Massimo Serato]—a paraplegic studio director who lives for sensational stories, and who believes there’s serious money to be made from the evidence.

Carlo then approaches Don Salvatore Aniello [Fortunato Arena], a mafia boss, with the idea that the exonerating photos could clear his name—but the demand for 20 million lire shocks the room, and Don Salvatore laughs off the offer. Meanwhile, one of the killers, Garrù [Domenico Maggio], is shot dead by his accomplice outside a nightclub, injecting a fresh note of danger into the already tense chain of events. Unfazed, Carlo turns to a newspaper he once worked with, pressing for the same payoff, and the editor, Mauri [Antonio La Raina], hesitates, aware of the risks that publishing the photos could unleash.

A anonymous call signals a ransom, and the paper sends Roversi [Carlo Landa] to retrieve the incriminating material. The killer strikes first, stabbing Roversi to steal the photographs, but the loot isn’t with him—it’s a trap that the killer escapes. The fallout hits close to home as Inspector Vezzi fumes at the paper, Carlo, and Uncle Fifi for delaying the investigation just as the killer shifts focus toward them.

Carlo and Olga are forced into hiding, but the danger catches up with Uncle Fifi when the killer strangles him. Olga endures a brutal assault as the intruder searches for Carlo, and although Carlo rushes to intervene when he hears her cries from the hospital, Olga dies from her injuries shortly afterward.

With the net closing in, Carlo leans on Vezzi, who decides to use him as bait. The staged meeting goes awry when the would-be killer appears to shoot Carlo, but the bullet is blocked by a pane of protective glass. When the room lights swing onto the suspect, the killer is unmasked as Mauri [Antonio La Raina], who is cornered and arrested. Mauri’s disclosure reveals a web of collaboration with Garrù and a darker motive: he killed Anchisi to halt the investigation’s momentum. The confession ties together the blackmail, the killings, and the cover-ups, and Carlo ultimately finds a measure of absolution for his role in navigating the perilous press-and-police maelstrom.

In the end, truth, money, and danger collide, leaving Carlo to reckon with the costs of bearing witness in a case where power and crime are deeply intertwined, and where the price of justice may be paid in lives and reputations rather than in headlines.
