In this tense Italian thriller, a serial killer is terrorizing women across the country, and the investigation threads through a strained marriage that centers on money and infidelity. Giorgio Mainardi is married to Norma Mainardi for financial reasons, and his numerous affairs fuel an unhappy, brittle relationship. When the killer’s lighter, engraved with Giorgio’s initials, surfaces in the crime, the menacing figure taunts Giorgio with a chilling proposition: he won’t expose the killer if the killer murders Norma on Giorgio’s behalf. The killer initially carries out the crime, and Norma’s disappearance becomes a tangled catalyst for everything that follows.
The killer’s crime sprees push the story toward a new complication. A young couple, Luca and Laura, seize an opportunity to steal the killer’s car, hoping to use it for a seaside getaway. Norma’s body sits in the trunk, a grim reminder of the price of their impulsive act. In the aftermath, the killer redirects his hunt to the carjacker’s location, while Giorgio pretends to mourn Norma’s loss, a performance that police quickly begin to doubt. Meanwhile, the couple’s escape plan collides with danger as they reach a rundown villa and attempt to lay low.
At the villa, trouble intensifies. While [Luca] is out gathering supplies, he encounters a stranded blond woman—Dizzy Blonde—on the roadside, and brings her back to the car. Back at the property, the killer tracks Laura down, finding her alone and erupting in violence, even as Luca shares a moment with the new arrival in the back of his own car. The tension spikes as the killer overpowers Luca, and he fatally stabs the blond woman. Laura, still bound, fights for freedom. In a decisive turn, she breaks free and delivers a fatal blow to the killer, stabbing him and bringing his reign of terror to an end.
As the police close in, their gratitude is directed toward the couple who finally halted the killer. They had been actively pursuing him for months, and their actions become the key to ending a long stretch of fear. In a calculated trap designed to bring Giorgio to justice, the authorities leave Norma’s car with her body in front of his house. Giorgio, seen attempting to sink the evidence, is exposed and arrested, bringing the film’s case to a close.
The film blends noir mood with a stark, procedural edge, showing how deceit, desire, and desperation collide across a landscape of flux and danger. The performances, anchored by a calculating Giorgio, a grieving Norma, a driven Luca, a wary Laura, and the cold menace of the killer, create a chilling portrait of crime and consequence.
