Lou Castel

Lou Castel, born Ulv Quarzell on 28 May 1943 in Bogotá, Colombia, is a Swedish‑born actor whose career has spanned more than six decades across Italy, Germany, France and his native Sweden. The son of a Swedish diplomat father and an Irish mother, Castel spent his early childhood in Cartagena before moving with his mother to Europe after his parents’ separation, attending schools in London, Stockholm and eventually Rome, where his mother worked in the local film industry. His early fascination with performance led him to enroll briefly at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, although he was expelled, and his first screen appearance came as an uncredited extra in Luchino Visconti’s epic The Leopard (1963). Two years later, Castel achieved international notoriety playing the troubled, epileptic Alessandro in Marco Bellocchio’s controversial Fists in the Pocket (1965), a role that cemented his reputation as a daring and emotionally intense performer. Throughout the late 1960s he became a recognizable face in both art‑house cinema and the burgeoning spaghetti‑western genre, starring in Carlo Lizzani’s Requiescant (1967), Damiano Damiani’s revolutionary thriller A Bullet for the General (1967) and Salvatore Samperi’s erotic drama Come Play with Me (1968). His political convictions deepened during this period; a committed communist, he joined the Maoist Union of Italian Communists (Marxist‑Leninist) and, amid Italy’s turbulent “Years of Lead,” was declared an undesirable alien and deported to Sweden in 1972. Despite the setback, Castel returned to the screen as a character actor, working with auteurs such as Wim Wenders and Claude Chabrol, and later settled in France in the early 1990s where he continued to choose roles that reflected his left‑wing beliefs, portraying terrorists in films like Nada (1974) and Year of the Gun (1991). A polyglot who jokes that Swedish is the only language he no longer uses naturally, Castel remains active in European cinema, his filmography ranging from high‑brow arthouse pieces to low‑budget exploitation, and he is the father of a son with actress Marcella Michelangeli.
