The idyllic existence of Robert and Claire Williams seems perfect until tragedy strikes when their six-year-old son David dies accidentally by drowning while they were making love in their boat. The loss shatters Claire; after numerous suicide attempts and a mental breakdown, she is hospitalized. Her husband Robert tries to cope with the strain, but the pressure proves too much for both. After Claire is released from the hospital, with the hope of full recovery, the couple plan a trip to the countryside to a Georgian manor, a secluded large estate left to Claire by her recently deceased aunt.

Their journey is slowed by fog; the weather is so thick that Robert narrowly avoids a head-on collision and crashes into a tree. When they finally reach the manor, it seems like the perfect setting to rekindle their romance, but the atmosphere rapidly turns oppressive. The house seems to harbor memories and a sense of unease, and soon Claire begins hearing strange unidentifiable voices within the walls.

The voices take shape as the ghostly figure of a young girl, Jessica, who plays with a toy ball and seems oblivious to the living couple. She is not alone; the ghostly presence includes her mother Lynn Farleigh and her brother John as well. Claire desperately tries to convince Robert that she has seen the supernatural, but he refuses to acknowledge what she experiences. However, both Claire and Robert begin to experience a series of unexplained events that shake their grip on reality and even question their own existence.

As the encounter with the paranormal deepens, the couple decides to leave the house and return to their car. In a chilling realization, they discover that they are dead—their car had crashed into the tree, and since their arrival at the manor they have been ghosts.
