Vikram Vedha 2017

Vikram is an honest police inspector who sees crime in stark black-and-white terms, while Vedha is a legendary gangster who understands the gray areas in between. The two men are pulled into a charged game of brinkmanship when Vikram’s best friend, Simon, runs a special encounter unit tasked with taking down Vedha. A brutal first encounter leaves several of Vedha’s henchmen dead, and an unarmed suspect is killed to avoid deeper scrutiny. As the unit plans another operation, Vedha walks into the police station and surrenders of his own accord, setting the stage for a conversation that will reveal far more than a routine arrest.

When Vikram begins the interrogation, Vedha offers to tell a story, and the first tale unfolds around Vedha’s early days as a drug smuggler. He tries to steer his younger brother, Pulli out of crime, warning him to stay away from the underworld. But Pulli, nicknamed “Pulli” for his exceptional mathematical skill, is pulled into the drug trade by a rival gang led by Ravi. After Pulli and his friend are caught, Pulli confesses, and Ravi is pulled into custody. The past is further complicated when Sangu, the boss, orders [Ravi] to assault Pulli, leaving a permanent scar on Pulli’s hand. Vedha questions Vikram about whether he should kill Ravi or Sangu; Vikram’s reply—that Sangu is the real culprit and Ravi is merely a weapon—leads Vedha to allude to having killed Sangu. The tension intensifies when Vedha’s lawyer, who turns out to be Vikram’s wife, Priya, intervenes and bails Vedha out. Vikram soon realizes that the unarmed delinquent whom their unit tried to hide behind a frame-up was actually Pulli, recognized by the mark on his hand. The fear of Vedha’s retaliation hangs over Vikram as he tries to protect Simon, only to discover that Simon and Chandra have been shot dead. SP Surendar, the station’s chief, dismisses the case as a botched encounter, and Priya refuses to reveal Vedha’s whereabouts to Vikram. Frustrated and worried, Vikram storms Vedha’s tenements and captures him, but Vedha asks to tell him one more story.

In the second act, the second story follows Pulli as an adult who agrees to launder Vedha’s income by investing it in the stock market. Vedha’s associate Chetta puts ₹5 crore into the venture, but trouble erupts when Chandra’s supposed kidnapping and the missing money threaten to topple the operation. Chandra returns having stolen the money to start anew, but she comes back because she loves Pulli. Vedha hands the money back to Cheta, who then orders him to kill Chandra. Vedha asks Vikram whether he should respect Cheta and carry out the order or disobey to stand with Pulli and Chandra, thereby risking a gang war. Vikram sides with Pulli, and Vedha agrees, realizing that Pulli’s innocence complicates the path forward. This moment unsettles Vikram, and Vedha urges him to look deeper into Simon and Pulli’s deaths.

Vikram’s investigation grows more intense as he follows Simon’s informant, [Kaattai], and discovers that Kaattai has been killed. Vikram and his team track the killer and encounter a member of Vedha’s Kerala Quotation Gang, who nearly defeats Vikram before Santhanam, Santhanam, kills the would-be assassin. A clue then points to a cigar in a room—its tobacco replaced with marijuana—pinpointing Ravi as the mastermind behind the police encounter. Vikram informs Vedha, who brings Ravi to an abandoned factory for a confrontation. In the final act, Vedha reveals the third and final story: he had sent Pulli and Chandra to Mumbai, and while all his men were being eliminated by the police except Cheta’s, Vedha observed a disturbing pattern. Ravi’s confession confirms that Simon was bribed to eliminate Vedha’s crew, but Vikram’s reflection on whether Simon’s corruption justified his son’s medical needs leaves him morally unsettled. Vedha kills Ravi, leaving Vikram to confront the truth of who orchestrated the killings of Simon and Chandra.

Surendhar and the rest of the unit arrive, denouncing Vikram for letting Vedha escape again. Vikram soon realizes that the entire unit has also been bribed by Ravi: they killed Vedha and abducted Chandra to lure Vedha out of hiding, so Vedha’s enemies could finish him once and for all. A tense standoff erupts as Vedha reappears and saves Vikram, and a devastating gunfight ensues. Vikram disables most of his colleagues with Vedha’s help, but he fires the fatal shot to kill Surendar. In the climactic moment, Vikram asks Vedha whether he should be allowed to go for saving his life or be killed for his crimes. The film closes on a tense standoff between the two men, leaving their fates unresolved and the moral lines between law and crime blurred for good.
