The film unfolds during the Viking raids of the ninth century, around 860 AD, tracing the arc of a Norwegian raid that begins with bold, nearly reckless momentum. A band of Viking warriors travels under the command of Thorir, Tor Stokke, and his companion Einar as they strike a Slavic village. The village is left barren of men who have fallen in battle with Danish invaders, its few rewards reduced to slim pickings and a lone moose hunted by Kuksha, a young Slavic boy. In a moment of audacious courage, Kuksha Aleksandr Timoshkin steps forward to challenge the intruders and even goes up against the fearsome berserker Sigurd, who quickly writes him off as a mere thrall.
