Totem Reviews & Ratings
Our Echo Score gives it 51/100, strongest in art & craft (58) and weakest in story & flow (44).
Totem Echo Score Breakdown
Totem delivers a modestly engaging premise with a supernatural twist, yet its execution falters across key areas. While the early setup and occasional atmospheric moments provide intrigue, inconsistent pacing, a disjointed second half, and predictable scares undermine its overall impact. The film’s modest production values and uneven narrative result in a mixed viewing experience that may satisfy genre fans but offers limited lasting appeal.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 58
In terms of art and craft, the film shows flashes of competence, particularly in its eerie production design and occasional effective framing. However, budget constraints are evident in the cinematography, and editing issues contribute to pacing problems. The overall visual and technical execution remains uneven, yielding a moderately competent but not standout artistic presentation.
- Character & Emotion 55
When assessing character work, the lead performances display moments of credible fear and vulnerability, especially from the central teenage protagonist. Supporting actors, however, often appear flat, and character decisions can feel illogical, reducing emotional resonance. The mixed quality of acting and limited depth results in an average character impression overall.
- Story & Flow 44
The story begins with a compelling family dynamic and an intriguing supernatural hook, but soon loses cohesion. Pacing drags in the first act, and the narrative becomes disjointed and predictable in later sections, with unresolved plot threads and a rushed conclusion. These structural weaknesses lower the overall storytelling effectiveness.
- Sensory Experience 52
Sensory elements such as sound design and visual style contribute unevenly to the film's mood. The atmospheric score and occasional effective sound cues enhance tension, yet the overall sound mix is unremarkable and visual polish varies with budget constraints. This results in a mixed sensory experience that is sometimes immersive but often plain.
- Rewatch Factor 45
Rewatch value is limited by the film's pacing issues and predictability. While the twist offers a modest surprise and some scenes are memorable, the lack of sustained tension and narrative coherence reduce incentive for repeat viewings. Consequently, the movie holds only modest appeal for subsequent watches.

Spoilers ahead
Abby Lia McHugh and her sister Kellie Kerris Dorsey are coping with the death of their mother Lexy. Kellie discovers a necklace that once belonged to Lexy and realizes it can move objects around, and she begins to wonder if the pendant could be connected to a restless, lingering presence from her mother’s past. The mysterious totem soon makes its presence known by knocking over a jumble of trophies in Kellie’s room, a sight that makes their father James James Tupper worry that Kellie is attempting to sabotage his relationship with his girlfriend Robin Ahna O’Reilly, who has just moved in to help run the house.
