Nani believes a supernatural presence named Sator speaks to her, guiding her to record its supposed wisdom through automatic writing. The tension in the family thickens the day her husband dies and her daughter mysteriously vanishes, a mystery that casts a long shadow over the household. In the background, Adam—the grandson who also hears voices—tends to a quiet, isolated life in his late grandfather’s cabin, accompanied by his dog and a routine of checking a nearby deercam. By day, he explores the surrounding woods; by night, he reviews the footage gathered from the camera placed near the cabin. Back home, Deborah tries to hold the family together from a distance, while Pete drops in now and then, sharing a wary, unfinished conversation with the largely silent Adam about the strange events that tether them to the past.

As the days unfold, unsettling noises awaken in the cabin, and one night the family’s fragile balance shatters when Adam’s dog vanishes after a sudden disturbance in the woods. Evie, a friend of Pete, arrives at the cabin with an old photo album she found in Nani’s house. While she talks, Adam studies the photos and spots a picture of his own mother, prompting a sudden, dreamlike moment in which he seems to slip away. In that fugue state, the image of his mother—described here as a bald figure wearing fur and a deer skull—speaks to him with a chilling message: > what can’t be seen in the darkness can be shown in the light. The moment leaves him shaken, and the next day, Pete reveals that he suspects their grandfather, with Nani’s help, sacrificed himself so their mother could be with Sator.

Continuing through the album, Adam revisits former birthdays where his mother’s behavior had unsettled the family and where she, too, heeds Sator and engages in automatic writing. The eerie noises outside grow louder, and when Adam investigates, he discovers Evie tied to a tree. He frees her, but she is visibly terrified when she recognizes him. She flees, yet a strange, otherworldly force seems to pull her upward, and she is suddenly sucked into the sky.

Back at the cabin, the fragments of the vision of his mother haunt him, and he manipulates the deercam footage to reveal figures clothed in animal skins and skulls moving in the darkness between the trees. These mysterious figures begin to enter Adam’s cabin, forcing him to flee to a nearby cave. Inside, a figure dressed in fur and bones points toward him, a silent and unsettling omen that intensifies the sense that something ancient and dangerous is creeping back into their world.

Months pass, and [Pete] is released from a mental institution. Deborah picks him up, and he speaks with regret about Adam’s isolation, reminding him that “it wasn’t exactly safe for him to be around us.” Still, the visits resume, and Pete returns to the cabin, where a brutal turn of events unfolds: he sits on the sofa, but [Adam] reappears from behind, stabbing Pete in the throat and burning his face in the fireplace. As Pete’s body burns, Adam levitates, a stark image of the cost of the family’s descent into these unseen forces.

That night at Nani’s house, Deborah observes Nani laughing and speaking with an unseen figure. When Nani disappears, Deborah searches outside and encounters a shaved-headed Adam. He knocks her unconscious, and [Evie] pours gasoline on Deborah before they set her ablaze. Sator’s followers gather around the fiery blaze, fueling the ritual with the understanding that what has been hidden can no longer stay hidden.

In the final, tense moments, Adam returns to the house and passes a room where his bald mother sits with the family dog, a stark reminder of the dark transformation that has taken hold. He then joins Nani in a separate room where she sits with another Sator disciple, signaling that the cycle of intimidation and ritual has moved from the woods into the home, and the line between memory, belief, and menace has finally dissolved.
