Looking for a job Toni travels from Italy to Southern France in search of work, and a local woman named Marie takes him in as her tenant, a calm arrangement that soon blossoms into something more intimate. Their growing bond stands in quiet contrast to the arrival of Josepha, a Spanish guestworker who captivates Toni and draws him into a dangerous tango of longing. Josepha’s heart, however, belongs elsewhere, toward Albert, an educated and wealthier man from northern France whose presence unsettles Toni and stirs old passions into new flames. The film traces a fragile web of two couples—[Albert] and Josepha, and Toni and Marie—as they drift toward a forced double wedding, a union that promises stability but shadows the truth that Josepha remains Toni’s deepest love.

After Marie has thrown him out of her house, Toni’s fixation on Josepha grows hauntingly intense. He spends his days watching from a hut high in the mountains, observing Josepha’s house as if from a distant stage, his longing taking on the weight of a quietly burning fire. [Albert] becomes increasingly abusive, creating a climate where Josepha and her lover [Gabi]—the latter depicted as a bold, dangerous figure—see only one possible escape: steal money and vanish. The plan spirals toward catastrophe when Albert confronts Josepha and brutalizes her; in a desperate act of revenge, she kills him with his own gun. Amidst the shock, Toni learns of the plan from [Gabi] and insists on accompanying him to check on Josepha, a choice that binds him closer to a perilous fate.

Seeing Josepha in trouble, [Gabi] seizes the money and runs, leaving Toni with Josepha to face the consequences. Toni makes a selfless, even sacrificial choice, hoping to shield her from the aftermath of the crime. He races toward a rendezvous point to meet with Josepha, his steps driven by a creed of protection and love. But the ending comes suddenly and cruelly: he is shot dead before he can reach the place where they were to meet, leaving Josepha to confront the consequences of their fragile, doomed bond. The film closes on a note of quiet tragedy, where devotion and sacrifice collide with violence and loss, leaving behind a memory of a love that could not be saved and a life given up in its name.
