Steve Skorsky [Lee J. Cobb] has built a formidable reputation in security transport for financial institutions. His armored trucks are widely regarded as impregnable, guarded by trained personnel and state-of-the-art, computer-controlled routing that keeps gold and valuables moving with clockwork precision. The level of protection makes past raids almost unimaginable, a shield that seems to render any heist hopeless—until a bold, Las Vegas-targeted plan arises and changes the game. They came to rob Las Vegas.
Gino Vincenzo [Jean Servais] escapes from prison with a ruthless aim: to hit a Skorsky truck alongside his brother Tony. He envisions a clean, decisive strike, but Tony, ever the skeptic, insists the scheme needs more modern planning and sophistication. When Tony declines the collaboration, Gino pushes ahead with his own crew, yet the raid ends in tragedy, leaving Gino and his comrades dead in the desert aftermath.
Tony Ferris [Gary Lockwood] re-enters the scene with a cooler, more calculated scheme, drawing Inspector Douglas of the Treasury into the tangled web because Skorsky’s fleet moves gold that ties into Mafia interests. To get closer to Skorsky’s operation, Tony takes a casino job in Las Vegas and targets Ann Bennett [Elke Sommer], Skorsky’s secretary and secret lover who also struggles with a compulsive gambling habit. Tony helps her win big in exchanges that promise him a handsome cut of the profits, and Ann’s loyalty begins to tilt toward him.
As their bond grows, Ann becomes a crucial link in Tony’s plan; she provides the information he needs to ambush a Skorsky truck out in the Nevada desert. The heist is staged with care: the truck is holed up in an underground bunker, a staging ground meant to buy the crew time—time to either coax the guards into stepping out or to force entry. But impatience gnaws at the group, and individual members push their own methods, threatening to derail the operation before it even starts.
The hunt for the missing Skorsky truck tightens as Inspector Douglas, Steve Skorsky, and the Mafia all race to locate a vehicle that seems to have vanished into thin air. The suspense thickens as the plan teeters on the brink of collapse, with loyalties tested and the ever-present lure of a massive payday looming over every decision. Tony presses on, succeeding in his objective, yet Ann’s feelings push her toward a different ending: she urges him to forget the money and flee with her, seeking a life away from the peril and pressure of the scores. In a chilling realization, she understands the true motive behind the plan wasn’t wealth but revenge—vengeance for the death of Tony’s brother and a deliberate attempt to destroy Steve Skorsky’s hard-won reputation once and for all.
