To Rob a Thief 2007

Emilio Lopez, a wily Colombian con man, arrives in Los Angeles with just two weeks to pull off a score against his former colleague, Claudio Silvestrini, who now poses as Moctesuma ‘Mocte’ Valdez, a mogul peddling snake oil via infomercials to Latino immigrants. Emilio’s plan hinges on slipping into a real undercover operation, but none of their usual affiliates are willing to risk going undercover as day laborers, so he pivots to recruiting from within the immigrant community. To pull off the caper, he teams up with Alejandro Toledo, a DVD-piracy entrepreneur who has assembled a crew of amateurs who believe they can pass as immigrants and move unseen.

That carefully assembled crew is framed as a diverse mix: a father and his tomboy daughter, a nervous Cuban actor, a techie, and a muscle man, all operating under Alejandro’s direction. Alejandro has also been courting Silvestrini’s nanny, Gloria, hoping to leverage her inside access to the estate. The plan calls for them to gain entry to Silvestrini’s well-guarded mansion, locate two keys that unlock a vault, and spirit the money off the property before anyone notices the breach.

As the heist unfolds, Silvestrini begins to see through the ruse and recognizes Alejandro as a thief, a realization that puts Gloria in a difficult position and pushes her to reconsider her ties to the plans. The crew’s cohesion starts to crack under pressure, and loyalties become tangled as the mission teeters on the edge of exposure and failure.

In a dramatic turn that redefines every loyalty on the ground, it is revealed that Gloria has been a spy planted by Alejandro, orchestrated without the crew’s knowledge. To make the twist even more personal, Gloria is revealed to be Alejandro’s wife, adding a layer of betrayal that reframes the entire caper and intensifies the stakes for everyone involved.
