Jean Servais was a Belgian film and stage actor born on 24 September 1910 in Antwerp, Belgium, whose career spanned more than four decades and left an indelible mark on mid‑twentieth‑century French cinema. Trained at the Brussels Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, he earned the Second Prize and quickly attracted the attention of director Raymond Rouleau, leading to his engagement at the Théâtre du Marais where his performance in Le mal de jeunesse garnered acclaim in both Brussels and Paris. He later joined the celebrated Jean‑Louis Barrault theatre company, cementing his reputation as a versatile stage performer. His first screen appearance came in 1932 as a naive country dweller in the film Criminel, and throughout the 1930s he built a solid filmography with titles such as La Chanson De L'Adieu (1934) and Les Misérables (1934) where he portrayed the iconic Marius Pontmercy. After a wartime hiatus, Servais returned to cinema with La Danse De Mort (1948) and soon landed his most internationally recognized role as Tony le Stéphanois, the charismatic leader of a jewel‑thieving gang in Jules Dassin’s classic noir Rififi (1955), a film praised by François Truffaut as the pinnacle of the genre. He continued to collaborate with Dassin in He Who Must Die (1957) and appeared in Luis Buñuel’s politically charged La fièvre monte à El Pao (1959). In the 1960s he diversified into larger international productions, delivering memorable character parts in The Longest Day (1962) and That Man from Rio (1964). His later years saw him in Italian horror (The Devil's Nightmare, 1971) and French drama (Le Protecteur, 1974) before his final screen appearance in Un tueur, un flic, ainsi soit‑il… (1977).
