The Revolutionary 1970

In a placeless locale that echoes the United States of the late 1960s, a university student known only as “A” [Jon Voight] becomes increasingly radicalized as he believes the campus leftist organization he’s part of isn’t militant enough. The dean suspends him for his political activities, and his girlfriend Anne [Collin Wilcox Paxton] dumps him, signaling a turning point that pushes him toward more extreme ideas.

He joins a Marxist group led by Despard [Robert Duvall], a working-class factory worker who is stirring the pot for a general strike. The plan falters, the strike collapses, and A goes underground as government agents crack down on radicals, slipping further from the life he once knew. His university status is stripped away, and he is drafted into the army, only to desert when his unit is mobilized to quell a workers’ strike. He finds a fragile sanctuary with Helen [Jennifer Salt], a young bourgeois woman, hiding in a greenhouse as the world around him tightens its grip.

A is left adrift when Despard, under Party orders, refuses to mobilize his faction. In a bar, he crosses paths with the radical Leonard II [Seymour Cassel], and the three move into a web of increasingly dangerous schemes. Leonard II’s plans include liberating a pawn shop and then assassinating the judge who will oversee the trial of the factory workers. A’s role in the conspiracy hinges on a grim countermeasure: to detonate a second bomb if Leonard II’s device fails to explode.

As the judge begins sentencing several convicted strikers, Leonard’s bomb falters, and A ends up holding the detonator, faced with a life-or-death moment that tests his loyalties, beliefs, and sense of self. The film builds a tense portrait of radicalization, loyalty, and the costs of political violence, leaving A to confront the consequences of his choices in a world where ideals collide with real-world action.
