What Is The Misanthrope About?
The premise of The Misanthrope without spoilers.
Bergman brought production of Molière’s The Misanthrope to Copenhagen, broadcast on Danish TV. He used a dual approach: a stylised theatrical game and a rendering of the tragedy that engulfs Alceste and Célimène. Critics praised the adherence to Molière’s mise‑en‑scène and rhythm, calling it a ‘clean Molière’ instead of a Strindberg‑style tragedy.
