Ghita Nørby

Ghita Nørby is a celebrated Danish actress whose career spans more than six decades, making her one of the most prolific performers in Scandinavian cinema. Born on 11 January 1935 in Copenhagen, she is the daughter of opera singer Einar Nørby and received formal training at the prestigious Danish Royal Theatre for two years before joining its stage company in 1956. During her early years she quickly transitioned from theatre to film, earning her first screen credit in 1956 and accumulating a remarkable 117 film roles by 2005, including classics such as Baronessen fra benzintanken (1960), Sytten (1965), and the internationally acclaimed TV series Matador (1978). Her versatility shines through in both dramatic and comedic parts, and she has lent her distinctive voice to Danish dubs of Disney productions like Pocahontas and Mulan. In the 1990s she garnered critical praise for her performance in Riget and later continued to appear in contemporary films such as Silent Heart (2014) and Jauja (2014). Ghita Nørby has also been recognized with numerous honors, notably receiving the Ingenio et Arti medal in 2006, the Ibsen Centennial Commemoration Award, and a nomination for Best Actress at the 27th Guldbagge Awards for Freud's Leaving Home. Beyond the screen, her personal life has been marked by several marriages: first to architect Mogens Garth‑Grüner, then to Italian singer‑actor Dario Campeotto with whom she had her son Giacomo in 1964, followed by unions with actor Jørgen Reenberg and pianist/composer Svend Skipper. Despite a divorce in 2011, she remains a beloved figure in Danish cultural life, celebrated for her dedication, artistic range, and enduring influence on generations of actors.
