Gideon Patch Gary Cooper is the ship’s captain, a position he has held for four days since the death of the original skipper, Captain Taggart, aboard the Mary Deare. A marine salvage crew aboard the Sea Witch discovers a ghostly, storm-wracked vessel drifting in the English Channel—an eerie scene that raises questions about how the Mary Deare—out of Hong Kong—came to be adrift. When Patch refuses a straightforward salvage claim, John Sands Charlton Heston climbs aboard with his partner, Mike Duncan Ben Wright, hoping to seize the ship for themselves. Patch, though battered by his experiences, remains in control, recounting a harrowing past: two fires, a dynamiting, and a blow to the head that left him unconscious as the crew abandoned ship.
