After failing to get a newspaper reporter job, Bat Masterson is appointed marshal of Dodge City. In 1919, Bat Masterson Albert Dekker, now a New York City newspaperman, looks back on the century he spent riding the jagged edges of the American West and the moments that shaped him. He travels to Dodge City, Kansas to reconnect with an old friend, Inky Wilkinson Henry Hull, and finds himself drawn into the town’s turmoil when the sheriff is shot. Rising to the moment, Bat steps into the role of town lawman, his primary concern the aggressive consequences of King Kennedy Barry Sullivan and his unruly band of cowboys.
Dora Hand Claire Trevor sings a hymn in a church, and her voice hooks Bat as he begins to fall for her. The Reverend Samuel Small Percy Kilbride and Bat are surprised to discover that Dora works in the saloon, which is run by Dog Killey Porter Hall, the town’s mayor. The reverend views this arrangement as inappropriate, while Bat uses his ink and insight to condemn prejudice in a thoughtful newspaper piece that challenges biased views wherever they appear.
Dora’s good heart shows in quiet, everyday acts—she tends to a sick child and earns the respect of people in Dodge. She also dreams of a safer life for Bat, asking her Kansas City-based uncle to hire him for a newspaper there. The uncle, wary of Dora’s line of work, agrees only on one condition: that she never set foot in Kansas City again. Back in Dodge City, Dora contemplates a future with Bat but declines his marriage proposal, choosing instead to socialize with King Kennedy in the meantime. Yet a town-wide clash erupts, and a stray shot from Kennedy’s faction mortally wounds Dora.
Her loss leaves Bat at a crossroads. Grief, resolve, and a desire for a cleaner path push him to lay down his guns—literally—burying them and leaving Dodge City behind as the memory of what he once was lingers in his wake. The film threads memory, duty, and the costs of a violent life into a measured meditation on love, loyalty, and the price of choosing a different path.
