Don Giorgio, a priest and convent teacher, loves Orchidea and Giulia. He vows to return to the Church, then is beaten to death; Giulia is found with her throat cut. Inspector Boito, planning to marry Orchidea, sees her as the main suspect. The case may hinge on Ferruccio, a drugged boy who claims to have seen a murder, though his story is doubtful.
