The Saint in London 1939

Simon Templar, also known as “the Saint,” begins his latest adventure by meeting and hiring a reformed pickpocket and ex-convict named Dugan, who becomes his ally in the pursuit of justice. His mission is set into motion when Sir Richard Blake from British Intelligence approaches him with a critical assignment: to investigate Bruno Lang, a person suspected of being involved in espionage activities. Templar’s investigation takes him to Lang’s home, where he encounters a captivating and daring young woman named Penny Parker, who has been fascinated by his reputation and exploits. She becomes an unexpected accomplice, helping him steal vital evidence from Lang’s safe and providing assistance in his escape from peril.

During their hurried escape back to London, Templar and Penny manage to rescue a frightened French diplomat named Count Stephen Duni. Duni has been subjected to abduction, torture, and intimidation by Lang and his henchmen, and he is clearly terrified for his life. Templar takes Duni to a secluded inn, where he plans to keep him safe. Duni reveals that his country sent him to supervise a secret printing operation of new currency, but he was coerced into authorizing the printing of over a million pounds worth of bills. Lang and his associates aim to secretly use these banknotes for their own financial gains.

As the investigation deepens, Templar’s activities attract the attention of Inspector Claud Teal, his friendly rival from Scotland Yard. Meanwhile, an sinister figure Kussella captures Penny, demanding Templar surrender himself alone to ensure her safety. With the help of Dugan, Templar lunges into a daring rescue, freeing Penny and Dugan from Kussella’s grasp. Upon returning to the inn, they discover that Duni has been murdered—an act designed to throw suspicion onto Templar himself. It becomes clear that Templar has been framed by an unknown enemy, but Teal, aware of the setup, allows Templar to escape so he can pursue the true culprits.

Further clues lead Templar to a man named Stengler at the German embassy, who had been contacted by Duni shortly before his death. In a tense showdown at Lang’s residence, Templar, Penny, and Dugan find themselves in a race against time. Dugan is knocked out, Penny is restrained, and Templar faces a critical choice: return the stolen evidence in exchange for their lives. Demonstrating resourcefulness and bravery, Templar manages to disarm Lang and rescue Penny and Dugan. Tragically, Kussella is accidentally shot and killed by one of his own associates during the chaos.

Back at Scotland Yard, Inspector Teal arranges the arrests of Lang and Stengler for espionage and murder. Sir Richard Blake clears Templar of any suspicion, confirming his innocence and dedication to justice. As the case concludes, Templar prepares to part ways with Penny, choosing to leave before she can develop any romantic feelings that could complicate his mission. Throughout this adventure, Templar’s cleverness, daring, and unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth shine through as he navigates a web of deception, danger, and intrigue.
