In the fictional town of Somerton, Tennessee, L.B. Jones, a wealthy African-American funeral director, pursues legal help from the local firm run by Oman Hedgepath and his newlywed nephew Steve Mundine to navigate a troubling divorce. Jones claims his much younger wife is involved with white police officer Willie Joe Worth, whom he suspects is the father of her unborn child, and he wants the truth to come to light in court.
To dodge a public scandal, Willie Joe Worth pleads with Emma Jones not to contest the divorce, but she hopes to secure enough alimony to sustain the lavish life she has grown accustomed to. When Emma refuses to cooperate, Worth, with the aid of fellow officer Stanley Bumpas, arrests L.B. Jones on false charges after he refuses to withdraw the divorce suit, setting the stage for a tense confrontation between justice and prejudice.
Jones escapes and, cornered, faces the officers and refuses to cooperate even at gunpoint. Worth shoots him to death, with Bumpas standing by. Worth’s initial calm gives way to horror as he contemplates what he has done, and Bumpas compounds the scene by handling the body in a brutal, calculated way—slashing it and hanging it from a wrecker hook to suggest a revenge killing by others.
In the aftermath, the initial confessions are coerced and misrepresented; Hedgepath uncovers that the jailed man couldn’t have committed the murder and that the confessions were obtained with a cattle prod used at the jail. With the charges dropped, Worth, shaken by his actions, confesses to Hedgepath and to the Mayor, hinting that Hedgepath may have influenced his decision to act. Hedgepath then orchestrates a quiet, procedural resolution that keeps the affair out of public view, disposing of the murder weapon and ensuring the case ends without accountability for the officers involved.
Worth retains his job, while Emma appears poised to receive the financial settlement, though she risks ostracism within the black community. Hedgepath carries the emotional burden of the affair, and the Mundine family ultimately moves away, leaving him more isolated. In a brutal echo of the town’s tangled politics, Sonny Boy Mosby murders the off-duty Stanley Bumpas in a calculated act that he tries to present as an agricultural accident, rather than a revenge killing. Mosby later leaves town by train, seeming to bear the weight of the deed with a rare, quiet maturity, even as the larger questions about justice and accountability linger in Somerton.
