Princess Ann, portrayed by Audrey Hepburn, is a young royal from an unnamed country, who embarks on an extravagant tour across various European capitals, including the historic and enchanting city of Rome. Yet, as the pressure of her public duties mounts, she finds herself longing for freedom and a taste of the life outside her rigid schedule. One fateful night, after receiving a sedative from her doctor to help her unwind, she makes a bold decision to escape from her country’s embassy and venture into the heart of Rome all by herself.
As fate would have it, she falls asleep on a public bench, undisturbed by the world around her, until she encounters Joe Bradley, an American reporter played by Gregory Peck. Not immediately recognizing her, Joe offers her money for a taxi, but “Anya Smith,” as she introduces herself, refuses to divulge her home location, insisting on visiting the magnificent Colosseum instead. In a twist of coincidence and perhaps destiny, Joe opts to take the unsuspecting princess to his apartment for safety, albeit with a hint of amusement at her royal demeanor. However, he’s less than pleased when she claims his bed, relegating him to the discomfort of his couch.
The following morning, when Joe attempts to wake her, he finds himself racing off to work, leaving his mystery guest asleep. At the office, his editor, Mr. Hennessy, inquiries about the press conference with the princess. Joe, with swift improvisation, fabricates details regarding an interview he didn’t actually conduct, until Hennessy reveals that the princess has fallen ill and the conference has been unexpectedly canceled. Spotting a photograph of the princess, Joe realizes he has unwittingly sheltered royalty.
A golden opportunity reveals itself as Hennessy proposes a bet: if Joe can score an exclusive piece on the elusive princess, he would secure his job. Recognizing the potential for a significant story about his charming guest, Joe seizes the chance and enlists his photographer friend, Eddie Albert, to accompany them as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime throughout the breathtaking streets of Rome.
Their escapades unfold with delight—highlighting iconic locations including the “Mouth of Truth,” a marble sculpture rumored to bite off the hands of liars, symbolizing the inherent risks of their encounter. In an impulsive act of liberation, Ann shaves her hair in front of the famed Trevi Fountain, confiding in Joe her yearning for a simpler life, unshackled from royal obligations. As they dance under the stars aboard a boat, their connection deepens, yet the fervent realization dawns on Ann that their worlds cannot intertwine. With a heavy heart, she bids farewell to Joe, concealing her royal identity as she returns to the safety of the embassy.
Meanwhile, as the day unfolds, Mr. Hennessy discovers the truth about the princess’s disappearance and suspects Joe’s involvement. Despite pressure to reveal Ann’s whereabouts, Joe remains tight-lipped, aware of his affection for her. Even Irving Radovich, sensing the bond between Joe and Anya, decides against selling his clandestine photographs of her.
The following day, Princess Ann reappears at the postponed press conference, only to be met by Joe and Irving among the journalists. As Joe catches her eye, Irving captures her picture yet again, immortalizing their escapade. In a poignant moment, he presents her with the day’s photos—as relics from an adventure that touched her heart. In an unspoken agreement, Joe signals her that her secret remains intact. As she skillfully weaves a coded message of affection and thanks into her bland statements for the press, she departs, leaving Joe awash in nostalgia, pondering the life they could have shared together—an unmistakable reminder of what might have been.
