The Kitchen 2019

In the gritty landscape of Hell’s Kitchen in 1978, three middle-aged women find themselves intertwined with the Irish mafia through their marriages. Kathy Brennan, portrayed by Melissa McCarthy, shares her life with her kind-hearted yet hesitant husband Jimmy (Brian d’Arcy James), and together they are raising a son and a daughter. Meanwhile, Ruby O’Carroll, played by Tiffany Haddish, is wed to Kevin (James Badge Dale), the son of Helen O’Carroll (Margo Martindale), who is also set to inherit the family’s criminal enterprise. The timid Claire Walsh, depicted by Elisabeth Moss, is suffering under the abusive grip of her husband Rob (Jeremy Bobb).

One fateful evening, as Jimmy, Rob, and Kevin attempt to rob a convenience store, they are busted by FBI Agent Gary Silvers (Common) and his partner. This incident lands the men behind bars for three years. In their absence, the trio of wives faces uncertainty; while in prison, Kevin finds that Little Jackie has taken charge and is only willing to offer them minimal support, a meager allowance for their survival.

Feeling desperate, Kathy struggles to provide for her children, while Claire is scarred after a brutal assault in the homeless shelter where she volunteers. When the women confront Jackie about their financial needs, he coldly rebuffs them. Facing overwhelming expenses and minimal help from the mob, the women decide to take matters into their own hands. With help from Kathy’s cousin Duffy and his friend Burns, they start collecting protection fees, quickly becoming local heroines as they help revitalize their struggling neighborhood.

As tensions rise, Jackie’s men retaliate against Duffy and Burns when they attempt to sever ties with the women. In a twist of fate, Gabriel O’Malley (Domhnall Gleeson), a former mob enforcer thought to be in hiding, comes to Claire’s aid after she is attacked by Jackie. Gabriel, having harbored feelings for Claire, becomes their main enforcer and helps the women navigate their newfound power, teaching Claire how to protect herself.

The women, determined to assert their authority, confront union leaders and organized crime bosses. They successfully negotiate a deal with Alfonso Coretti (Bill Camp), who reluctantly acknowledges their power. In exchange for support, they offer him a portion of their earnings—a strategic and precarious alliance that underscores the shifting dynamics in the criminal underworld.

As their husbands prepare for release, the women bolster their control over the territory and are forced to deal with brutal realities. Kevin, Jimmy, and Rob return to a landscape where the balance of power has shifted. The ensuing conflicts lead to betrayal, violence, and ultimately, murders that paint a vivid picture of their struggle for power in a male-dominated world.

Ultimately, Kathy and Ruby rise as two of the most formidable women in New York, having claimed their place amongst the city’s infamously dangerous legacy.
