On Christmas Eve in the early 1930s on Walton’s Mountain, the family prepares for the holiday while anxiously awaiting Pa’s return from his city job fifty miles away. When he’s late, Ma and the grandparents hear a radio report of a bus accident that fuels their worry. John‑Boy steps in to help Grandfather cut down a Christmas tree and, learning of Daddy’s situation, sets out to locate him.
