Cleavon Little: Movies, Awards & Box Office

Cleavon Jake Little was an accomplished American stage, film, and television actor whose career began in the late 1960s. Interestingly, he didn't start on the big screen but on stage. His stage roles ultimately led to his numerous awards, including a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award in 1970 for his role in the Broadway production Purlie. Little is most notably recognized for his portrayal of Sheriff Bart in the 1974 Mel Brooks comedy film Blazing Saddles. In the late 1980s, Little still graced the stage, films, and television series. He notably won a Primetime Emmy Award for appearing on the NBC sitcom Dear John in 1989 and later played a lead role on the Fox sitcom True Colors.

Little was raised in San Diego, California, and he worked his way through college as a janitor. His exceptional talent was recognized early in his career and he won a scholarship from the American Broadcasting Company to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. His outstanding performance in the class of 1967 earned him the title of best actor. His stage career was extensive, he appeared in numerous productions and made his Broadway debut in 1969. Little would also appear in guest spots on known television series, and had numerous film roles. He successfully crossed genres and platforms, ensuring a diverse and extensive body of work. Little's career spanned decades until his untimely death in 1992.
