In 1956, after losing his job as a traveling salesman of children’s furniture, Tommy Wilhelm heads to New York City, carrying the weight of financial strain from his separated wife. He ends up in a shared hotel with his physician father, Dr. Adler, [Joseph Wiseman], a relationship that is strained and emotionally distant. The move sets a precarious stage: a man trying to find footing in a big city while bearing the sting of failed promises and unsettled debt.
Flashbacks peel back the surface, showing Tommy’s earlier attempt to reinvent himself in Los Angeles. He changed his name and pursued acting roles that never took him anywhere substantial, and his marriage unraveled in parallel, leaving him estranged from their two sons. These memories sketch the roots of his current vulnerability, hinting at patterns he’s tried to escape but cannot fully outrun.
In New York, Tommy crosses paths with Jerry Stiller as Dr. Tamkin, a wheeling-and-dealing acquaintance of his father who trades in the commodities market. Tamkin convinces Tommy to open an account that’s managed on a 50–50 basis, but soon pressures him to contribute most of the capital himself. The arrangement tightens its grip as prices dip, and Tommy is urged to stay calm and seize the moment rather than pull out at the first sign of trouble.
The venture collapses, wiping out Tommy’s life savings and leaving him unable to cover his hotel bill. With his support system fraying—his wife remains unsympathetic, and his father refuses to offer emotional help—Tommy is left to reckon with the consequences of a deal gone wrong. He searches for Tamkin, who has vanished, and ends up at a stranger’s funeral, where his raw tears spill over as he is mistaken for a mourner.
What unfolds is a quiet, painstaking portrait of a man navigating a widening maze of loss, pride, and missed chances. The story tracks the tension between aspiration and reality, the fragility of trust, and the jolting impact of financial ruin on a life already stretched thin. Throughout, Tommy’s encounters—with a hard-nosed con artist, with familial distance, and with the indifferent currents of a city that never seems to slow down—paint a stark, empathetic picture of a man trying to reclaim his balance in a world that refuses to grant him a simple second chance.
