Philip “Fyvush” Finkel was born on October 9, 1922, in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, New York City, the third of four sons to Jewish immigrants from Minsk and Warsaw. From the age of nine he stepped onto the Yiddish stage, quickly becoming a staple of the bustling Yiddish Theater District on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. For nearly three and a half decades he performed in Yiddish plays, comedy sketches, and Catskills Borscht Belt revues, mastering the rapid-fire humor and linguistic nuance that defined the community’s entertainment. After a brief apprenticeship as a furrier, he returned to the theatre, joining a Jewish stock company in Pittsburgh before resuming his New York career. When the ethnic venues began to disappear in the early 1960s, Finkel transitioned to Broadway, debuting in the original 1964 production of "Fiddler on the Roof" as Mordcha, the innkeeper, and later taking on the iconic roles of Lazar Wolf and, for many touring seasons, the beloved Tevye the milkman. His off‑Broadway work included a celebrated run as Mr. Mushnik in "Little Shop of Horrors" and an Obie‑winning performance as Sam in the New York Shakespeare Festival revival of "Cafe Crown". Finkel’s screen breakthrough arrived in the 1990s when David E. Kelley cast him as public‑defender Douglas Wambaugh on the CBS drama Picket Fences. His nuanced, deadpan delivery earned him a 1994 Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor, a moment he famously described as a reward after “51 years of waiting.” He later portrayed the curmudgeonly history teacher Harvey Lipschultz on Fox’s Boston Public, and continued to lend his distinctive voice to animated series such as The Simpsons and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. Throughout the 2000s he appeared in films ranging from the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man to Nixon, and remained a beloved stage presence with productions like New Jerusalem (2007). Married to Trudi Lieberman from 1947 until her death in 2009, the couple raised two musically talented sons, Ian and Elliot. Finkel’s career, spanning 1931‑2016, left an indelible mark on both Yiddish theater and mainstream American television, illustrating the power of cultural resilience and artistic versatility.
