Geoffrey Sherwood, Ian Hunter, is spurned by Valentine French Katharine Alexander in favor of wealthier suitor John Marland Colin Clive, and he watches her wedding from outside the church. In his drunken haze, he becomes increasingly loud, drawing the attention of two policemen. Miriam Brady Bette Davis, a shopgirl on her lunch hour, steps in to spare him from arrest and leads him to a cafe. There they encounter Hugh Brown John Eldredge and Tony Hewlitt Phillip Reed, two of his society friends, who offer Miriam $100 to keep an eye on Geoffrey and make sure he stays out of trouble.
