Eight-year-old Flavia Mills Margaret O’Brien lives in a crowded New York tenement during the Great Depression, sharing a small space with her mother Helen Mills Phyllis Thaxter, her father Joe Mills Warner Anderson, and her aunt Susan Bratten Angela Lansbury, whose presence and patience offer a fragile balance to the family’s daily struggles. Flavia is buoyed by the return of Steve Abbutt George Murphy, her aunt’s sweetheart, after a year away, a beacon of hope that temporarily brightens their cramped routine.
