The Flood Reviews & Ratings
Critics gave The Flood 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and 56 on Metacritic, and IMDb users rate it 4.4/10. Our Echo Score gives it 35/100, strongest in character & emotion (55) and weakest in rewatch factor (20).
The Flood Echo Score Breakdown
The Flood struggles with narrative momentum and technical execution despite its committed central performances. Critics highlight the controlled restraint of Lena Headey and Ivanno Jeremiah but note that low-key tension and uneven pacing hamper engagement. Heavy-handed musical cues and abrupt editing choices contribute to a sense of predictability, while user feedback underscores flawed CGI and occasional incoherence in character motivations. Although the flashback structure offers intermittent interest, it cannot overcome the film’s lack of surprising developments. Ultimately, The Flood leaves a largely forgettable impression with few redeeming features.
Our own 0–100 rating, built from five aspects: art, character, story, the sensory experience and how well a film rewatches.
- Art & Craft 45
In terms of art and craft, The Flood presents modest production design and serviceable cinematography hampered by stylistic clichés. The British television aesthetic yields predictable framing, and editing transitions into flashbacks can feel abrupt and disruptive. Heavy-handed musical underscores often intrude rather than enhance mood. Overall, the restrained art direction and sporadic technical inconsistencies limit the film’s visual cohesion and narrative clarity.
- Character & Emotion 55
In terms of character and emotion, the film is anchored by quiet, controlled performances from Lena Headey and Ivanno Jeremiah. Their restrained portrayals convey underlying empathy and maintain a consistent tone throughout. However, supporting roles often lack depth, and moments of emotional resonance can feel uneven. While the leads provide the film’s primary affective connection, uneven character development elsewhere reduces the overall emotional impact.
- Story & Flow 35
When it comes to story and flow, The Flood struggles with pacing and coherence. Critics describe a lack of narrative urgency and underdeveloped plot threads that impede engagement. The flashback structure introduces background context but can interrupt momentum with abrupt transitions. User feedback highlights a formulaic premise and a scarcity of surprises. As a result, the narrative feels uneven and fails to sustain consistent tension or originality.
- Sensory Experience 25
In terms of sensory experience, the film is marked by intrusive music cues and inconsistent sound design. Reviews note heavy-handed scoring that undermines atmosphere and CGI effects that range from serviceable to clearly synthetic. Visual style often lacks cohesion, with jarring shifts between realistic and overtly stylized imagery. These technical variances distract from immersion and reduce tension, compromising the intended atmospheric impact.
- Rewatch Factor 20
When it comes to rewatch factor, The Flood offers limited replay value due to its predictability and technical flaws. The absence of surprising developments and the reliance on familiar genre conventions diminish lasting appeal. Although a few moments of effective tension may register on initial viewing, flaws in CGI, pacing, and narrative coherence deter subsequent viewings. Overall, it is unlikely to sustain repeated engagement.
