The Country Doctor unfolds in a remote Quebec timber town, where Dr. John Luke, Jean Hersholt, serves a tight-knit community as an unlicensed general practitioner. He tends to neighbors from a humble clinic that doubles as his home, accepting much of his payment in barter and weathering years of hard living as the only medical presence in the area. After a devastating diphtheria outbreak claims several children, Luke resolves to push for a proper hospital by traveling to Montreal to meet the region’s medical leadership and press the case for a landowning timber corporation to fund better care.
