Lidia Yuknavitch grows up torn between a love for writing and a passion for swimming, both serving as refuges from a home life marked by abuse. Her father, Mike, physically harms her and her sister Claudia, while their alcoholic mother Dorothy largely ignores the turmoil. Those early memories shape her resilience and fuel a determination to seek a different future, where words and water might offer sanctuary.

Determined to break free, she fights to go to college, but the grip of control from her father remains a constant threat. She eventually leaves for Texas to study, swim, and explore her sexuality, pursuing a path that promises independence. Yet the lure of escape is tangled with self-destructive tendencies: heavy partying, drinking, and drug use threaten both her academics and athletic aims, allowing old wounds to intrude on new opportunities.

On campus, she meets Philip and marries quickly, hoping to find safety in a tender, sensitive partnership. But she projects her trauma onto him, sometimes treating him as weak, and the relationship bears the strain of unresolved anger. When she becomes pregnant, she leaves him to move in with Claudia and Dorothy, hoping to raise the child together, yet the baby is stillborn, a devastating blow that haunts her. She reconciles with Philip, spreads the baby’s ashes at sea, and they eventually divorce; the memory of their loss lingers, coloring future encounters and choices.

With her scholarship lost and direction unclear, a friend persuades her to join the University of Oregon, where she engages with a writing class that includes a collaborative novel with fellow students. In this setting, she forms a meaningful bond with Ken Kesey, a mentor who understands grief through his own family tragedy and who helps her see her trauma in a new light. Kesey’s presence, paired with the support of the academic community, becomes a catalyst for healing. To address deep-seated pain, she also begins seeing a BDSM therapist, a decision that taps into unconventional avenues for processing trauma and reclaiming agency.

She later enters a fervent, turbulent second marriage to Devin. The intensity of this relationship mirrors the longing she has chased since childhood, yet it ultimately dissolves as fragility and conflict resurface. After a powerful live reading of her work, a publishing opportunity arises, offering professional validation even as personal demons threaten her stability and deepen her struggle with alcoholism.

A reckoning comes in the form of a car crash driven by intoxication, an arrest, and a community service sentence. The turning point arrives when she begins teaching creative writing at Eastern Oregon University, a vocation that reconnects her with the craft that started her journey. There, she meets Andy, a partner who has followed her career for years. Although she initially resists expanding her family again, Andy convinces her that she deserves motherhood, and they welcome a son, Miles. The film closes on a hopeful, intimate image: the young family swimming together at a lake, with Lidia reflecting on the healing power of water and the sustaining promise of storytelling for a life rebuilt from trauma.
