The Boys from Leningrad 1954

On the riverboat Rossiya, the factory football team Blue Arrows sails toward Sukhumi to face the favored Vympel in the Trade Unions Cup final, a showdown that promises to crown the season’s contenders. The journey isn’t a simple cruise; it becomes a test of character, teamwork, and nerve as the crew encounters a string of surprises before the decisive match.

Vasya Vesnushkin [Georgiy Vitsin] is a gifted reserve striker who finds himself swept up in a crush on the gymnast Valya [Tatyana Konyukhova], even as he worries she might prefer his brash older brother, Sasha Barashkin [Aleksandr Kuznetsov], the team’s star. The boat becomes a stage for budding romance, rivalry, and the tug-of-war between two brothers as the days tilt toward the game.

A second thread unfolds aboard the Rossiya around a young actor Svetlanov (played by [Pavel Kadochnikov]), who pretends to be Dedushkin to prepare for a future role. Researchers from the Institute of Gerontology mistake him for Professor Babushkin, sparking a comic yet telling misunderstanding. After a wine-fueled moment, Sasha Barashkin insults the “elderly man” and challenges him to a boxing match. When Dedushkin reveals his true identity as Svetlanov, the team’s coach bars Sasha from competing, and Vasya steps in to face the unexpectedly capable actor. Though outmatched, Vasya fights with grit and earns a hard-won draw, earning respect from the entire squad.

The action then shifts to Sukhumi, where the coach chooses Vasya to start in the final in place of Sasha. Vasya fires in two goals in the first half against Vympel, injecting hope into the Blue Arrows’ lineup. The match takes a rough turn when their goalkeeper suffers a knee injury, and later the substitute keeper is sidelined by a bee sting. With no one left to cover the post, Vasya remains in goal. In a dramatic climax, he makes a crucial save from a penalty right after the final whistle, securing a 3–2 victory for the Blue Arrows.

The victory brings more than trophy glory; Valya accepts a gift from Vasya, signaling that their bond has deepened and that his hard-won triumph is mirrored by personal growth. The team’s triumph, forged through perseverance and a series of unlikely moments, marks a turning point for both the players and their futures on and off the field.
