Poor, Poor Pavel 2003

On a cold November day in 1796, Emperor Pavel the First ascends the throne after the death of Empress Catherine the Great, who had steered Russia for 34 years. The new ruler is portrayed as a nervous and impulsive man, captive to his own visions and insecurities.

To enact his changes, he gathers supporters, among them the intelligent and calculating courtier Count Palen, who, through the emperor’s boundless trust, accumulates immense power. At first, Palen backs Paul’s reforms, but the mood at court grows increasingly hostile. Russia’s highest nobility, fueled by English money, grows deeply unhappy with the innovations and the rapid shifts in authority.

Paranoia takes hold as suspicion multiplies; Paul punishes both the innocent and the guilty, fearing for his life even as the conspiracy tightens around him. The atmosphere at court becomes stifling, and the emperor’s decisions are shadowed by distrust and the looming sense of danger.

The main conspiracy against Paul involves his own sons, Alexander and Constantine, and its leadership is carried out by Count Palen. The plot threads—family loyalty, political ambition, and the emperor’s fragile hold on power—intertwine in a dangerous web that jeopardizes the entire regime.

Overwhelmed by betrayal, Paul sinks into despair and waits for the conspirators in his bedroom at the Mikhailovsky Castle. His fate becomes a stark portrait of how quickly power, fear, and treachery can converge within a royal court.

The film offers a sober, in-depth look at late eighteenth-century Russian politics, exploring the fragility of authority and the human costs of political scheming.
