Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy star as janitors at a busy detective agency, where a routine assignment spirals into a high-stakes caper surrounding a bomb nicknamed The Big Noise. Posing as detectives, they befriend the bomb’s inventor, Egbert Hartley, and tumble into his world of eccentric relatives, including Aunt Sophie and Mayme Charlton.
Neighboring criminals plot to steal the explosive, so the duo must improvise to safeguard it, concealing the device inside a concertina. The criminals strike, and the pair momentarily turn them back, but a mix-up lands them with the genuine bomb, now entrusted to deliver it to Washington, D.C.
