Stan Minton, Rob Schneider, is a wealthy real estate con artist whose life with his wife Mindy, Jennifer Morrison, begins to unravel after he is arrested for defrauding elderly victims. He faces a trial headed by Judge Perry, with his defense handled by Mal, Richard Kind. The jury forewoman reads the guilty verdict, sealing a sentence that will be handed down the next day.

Mal refuses to bribe the judge—he doesn’t practice that kind of law—and tells Stan that any shyster on the street would take the shake. Frustrated, Stan fires Mal and hires Lew Popper, M. Emmet Walsh, to steer the sentencing. The judge sentences Stan to three years at Verlaine Correctional Facility, plus six months to reorganize the charity he started to teach music to mentally disabled children. With his assets frozen, Stan cannot take a permanent vacation to Brazil, so he drinks away his worries and ends up at a biker bar. There, a hardened ex-con delivers a brutal reality check about jailhouse life, straining his already fragile marriage and fearfully planting the seeds of his transformation.

A failed attempt to learn self‑defense at a dojo run by Master Cho brings Stan face to face with a mysterious guru known as The Master, who helps mold him into a formidable martial artist. The Master’s training pushes Stan to the limit, and he quickly proves capable of handling any challenge. After he passes every test, Lew informs him that he has been reassigned to Oaksburg Correctional Facility, and Stan heads off to prison with the Master and Lew watching over him as Mindy gazes on, torn between pride and worry.

Inside Oaksburg, Stan befriends an elderly inmate named Larry and forms a bond with a sympathetic prison guard, Bullard. He discovers the inner workings of prison life—the cliques, the rivalries, and the constant threat of violence—and uses his new skills to restore a fragile peace on the yard. He cowls the anger of stronger inmates, including Big Raymond, and earns their respect, gradually becoming the yard’s de facto leader.

But Warden Gasque has his own plan: close the prison through a riot and then sell the property. He also tests Stan by bringing in Dang, one of the Master’s students who sees an opportunity to manipulate Stan for early parole. Stan’s peacekeeping challenge becomes a personal conflict when Gasque pushes for violence to advance his scheme. In a tense sequence, Stan chooses conscience over convenience, rushing back to the parole board, defeating Dang in combat, and halting the potential bloodshed. Yet even as the prisoners dance in defiance, Gasque orders the guards to open fire.

Mindy and The Master manage to slip into the hearings, revealing that The Master secretly trained Mindy during Stan’s incarceration, a twist that complicates Stan’s understanding of his own relationships. Three years pass, and on Stan’s final day inside, Bullard has become the new warden, while Lew, now disbarred, makes a cameo to remind Stan of the road he’s traveled. The “No Rape” law remains in action, and Gasque finds himself ensnared by the consequences of his own corruption, with Big Raymond nudging him toward a fitting goodbye.

When the gate finally opens for Stan, he is greeted by his wife Mindy, their young daughter Mindy Jr., and The Master outside the prison. Stan has become Mindy Jr.’s devoted nanny, and he even politely asks The Master not to smoke in front of his daughter. The family leaves together, the Master winking at the audience as they drive off into the sunset, a quiet note of triumph lingering in the air.
