The young Benny Goodman, played by Steve Allen, grows up in Chicago where a respected music professor teaches him the clarinet in the classical tradition. Encouraged by bandleader Kid Ory to follow the music he loves, Benny takes his first real steps on the professional stage by joining the Ben Pollack traveling band.

In New York, Benny’s new group receives only a tepid reception, but a meeting with jazz patron John Hammond and his sister Alice sets the course for his future. He is invited to the stately Hammond home to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, a moment that reveals his steady technique and musical intuition, easing Alice’s fears that he might be laughed at.

Benny’s rise continues on a popular Saturday radio program, where Fletcher Henderson, represented here by the legendary performer Sammy Davis Sr., volunteers to arrange for him. On the West Coast, the radio show’s early start helps Benny reach a younger audience, turning him into a sensation. He forms a tight quartet with Gene Krupa on drums, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Lionel Hampton on vibraphone, creating a sound both bold and timeless.

The romance with Alice unsettles Benny’s mother, Mrs. Goodman, but by the time he steps onto Carnegie Hall’s stage, family acceptance is complete, and Alice receives Mrs. Goodman’s warm invitation to sit by her side. The performance marks a turning point that cements Benny’s place in the music world.
