Who is Henrietta Stein's secret lover before her marriage?
Read the complete plot summary of The Angel with the Trumpet, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Henrietta Stein, Henrietta Stein is the daughter of a Jewish academic and the secret companion of the Habsburg crown prince, Prince Rudolf. He cannot marry her, so she accepts a loveless union with Francis Alt, the head of the Alt Viennese piano-manufacturing firm, hoping to secure a stable life for herself and any future family. Their shared secret is known only to their mutual confidant, Baron Hugo Traun. On the day she marries, the prince’s despair drives him to take his own life, an event that casts a long shadow over Henrietta’s decisions and the life she builds with her husband.
Together, Francis Alt and Henrietta raise three children in a grand family home. Twelve years pass, and the baron returns to Vienna, rekindling their old affair. Henrietta finds herself drawn back into that passion, with plans to leave her husband for the baron. The affair is interrupted when her brother-in-law, Otto Alt, is near death, and her son Paul Alt discovers her in the baron’s arms. The family’s precarious balance shatters as she confesses, and her husband arrives unexpectedly. The next morning, the husband duels and kills the baron, ending a chapter that has haunted them all.
Years pass, and World War I upheaval changes everything again. The husband and sons enlist; the husband sustains injuries that leave him paralyzed and unable to speak. Paul Alt takes command of the aging piano factory, while Monica Alt leaves Vienna for America with her boyfriend Gino to escape the city’s deteriorating conditions. Herman Alt pursues risky, illegal arms trades and tumbles into financial peril. In a moment of need, he asks Henrietta for money, but she has nothing to give; she instead hands him her diamonds and asks him to leave the family home.
Despite these trials, good news arrives when Paul Alt announces his engagement. Henrietta shares all the family’s recent trials with her husband, who responds with a handwritten note apologizing for the life he chose, and they begin to repair their relationship. As time marches on, Herman Alt joins the Nazis, and the Anschluss arrives with its own perils. The regime’s flag raids the family home, and Henrietta faces arrest for not displaying the new order. In a desperate bid for safety, she leaps from a third-story window to her death. Minutes later, Herman Alt arrives with news that he has arranged for her Jewish ancestry to be erased, but it is already too late.
World War II reshapes Vienna, and the Alt family home is destroyed in bombing. The piano factory lies in ruins, yet Paul, his wife, their children, and one loyal worker begin the long labor of rebuilding. Against the ashes of the old era, they produce their first new piano, signaling a fragile but hopeful revival for a family that has endured profound loss, shifting loyalties, and the relentless pull of history.
