Descending Angel 1990

Michael Rossi, a recently engaged man, travels to meet his fiancée Irina Stroia’s father Florian Stroia and begins to sense a dangerous past behind Florian’s polished exterior. What starts as a hopeful visit to celebrate a union soon deepens into a tense investigation into a possible war-time memory that haunts the family.

As he questions Florian, Michael encounters a persistent name, Bercovici, who claims to be a survivor of a massacre in Romania in which Florian was involved. The trail leads him to a shadowy web linked to the church and to an older exposé about Florian, written by Sam Murray, who reveals the violence that followed Florian into America and hints at how ex-Nazis could slip into the country by posing as anti-Communists.

Seeking guidance, Michael turns to the apparently benevolent Bishop Dancu, who escorts him into the church’s deeper archives to show a so-called “secret report” that allegedly cleared Florian after FBI scrutiny. The scene underscores a clash between faith, legitimacy, and the truth, and it pulls Michael further into a narrative that many would prefer to keep buried.

Meanwhile, Michael learns that Vera, Irina’s mother, had uncovered Florian’s past and that he had her placed in a mental institution; she eventually took her own life. Irina, still clinging to a comforting family myth that her mother deserted them, resists the possibility of a brutal truth behind her father’s public image.

To try to convince her, Michael operates under the guise of a church meeting and enlists Sam Murray as a getaway driver for a risky break-in into Bishop Dancu’s file room. The caper escalates rapidly, and the moment is charged with danger as Michael is discovered and armed bodyguards open fire, killing Irina in the chaos. The police arrive soon after and arrest the guards, sealing the immediate consequences of the family’s hidden history.

In the aftermath, Florian faces the weight of a past he may not fully escape. Even if he avoids prison, the narrative makes clear that his conscience—however small—has already been irrevocably touched by the truth of what occurred. The film leaves a chilling sense that some histories refuse to stay buried, and the pursuit of truth can fracture even the closest relationships.
