In 1997, in the small town of Malegaon, an aspiring filmmaker named Nasir gathers a close-knit group of friends—Farogh, Shafique, Irfan, and Anuj Singh Duhan as Akram Khan—to create a movie for their hometown. They christen their project Malegaon ke Sholay, a playful tribute to the iconic film Sholay. The project resonates deeply with local audiences, and the movie parlour they run for screenings becomes a bustling hub, drawing in crowds and turning their venture into a remarkable local sensation. This early triumph gives the group a taste of success and the belief that cinema might become their lifelong calling.

Buoyed by the overwhelming response, Farogh dreams of pursuing an original storyline that would set them apart. Yet creative disagreements and divergent visions with Nasir and the others erode the harmony of the team. Caught between pride, recognition, and practical limits, Farogh eventually leaves for Mumbai, seeking different opportunities and a chance to chart his own path. The remaining members—Nasir, Shafique, Irfan, and Akram—continue to work in a climate of underpayment and anonymity, with their names largely unknown beyond their hometown. By 2004, the once-promising troupe is fractured, their collective momentum stalled, and the early glow of success fades into memory as they drift apart.

Over the years, tensions and broken ambitions deepen: Irfan and Akram depart the group, feeling they deserve more substantial recognition for their contributions. Nasir, once driven by the dream of directing, finds himself stepping away from cinema and eventually runs a restaurant instead of pursuing filmmaking as a career. The strain of unrealized potential hangs over Malegaon’s creative scene, and the sense of what could have been lingers in the air.

Then, in 2010, a new challenge hits hard: Shafique is diagnosed with cancer. Nasir, along with Imran and Akram, bands together to cover the costs of his treatment, and the burden of illness tests the bonds of friendship even as it renews a shared commitment. The cancer returns, threatening to derail any attempt at revival. Yet Nasir refuses to let the past define them. He brings the original circle back together to attempt a new project, with Farogh returning to craft the script and Shafique stepping into a leading role. The film they undertake is titled Superman of Malegaon, a project born from late-night conversations and a renewed belief that cinema can still change lives.

The journey culminates in a deeply personal moment: Shafique watches the finished film and, overwhelmed by the realization of his own dream realized at last, bursts into tears as he envisions himself as Superman soaring above the skies of Malegaon.
