Richie Maxwell [Craig Bierko] is down to his last quarter at a slot machine in Atlantic City, and he pleads with his cousin Evan [Steven Weber] for two more coins for one last spin. That single spin lands a life-changing $436,000 jackpot, turning a moment of joy into a flashpoint for conflict.
The celebration quickly gives way to a fierce dispute over who deserves a share of the windfall. Richie, a sneaker designer, offers Evan only a tiny percentage, while Evan—who provided two-thirds of the money spent on the spin—feels insulted and betrayed, igniting a bitter feud that strains family bonds and tests their patience.
As the disagreement deepens, Richie decides to keep all the money and quits his job, convinced that he can enjoy the winnings on his own terms. Evan, increasingly angry, orchestrates a cruel prank by letting Richie believe he is dying, a deception that rocks both men and rattles the fragile balance of their relationship.
The fallout escalates when Richie, in a desperate bid to shield his mother, Selma Maxwell from grief, had already staged a fake break-in in a misguided attempt to spark a fatal heart attack—an act that comes back to haunt everyone involved. The situation worsens as Evan, jolted by the deception, makes a grave mistake during surgery, altering lives in ways neither could have anticipated.
In the end, Richie loses all his money and finds himself right back where he started, facing the consequences of pride and a broken trust. Despondent, he returns home and, in a stark, troubling turn, engages in a private act of self-pleasure, a haunting image that underscores how far the characters have fallen from the hopes that began with a lucky spin.
