Lieutenant Mike Conovan, Van Johnson, a seasoned LAPD homicide detective, probes the murder of Ed Monigan, an older member of his precinct and former partner. The discovery that Monigan carried $1,000 in cash suggests it wasn’t a simple robbery, but raises the unsettling possibility that he was on the take. Conovan’s current partner and one-time mentor, John McIntire as Det. Fred Piper, is aging and his eyesight is failing, while rookie detective “C.C.” Gordon, Tom Drake, learns the ropes under Conovan’s steady guidance. The case quickly sets a wary tone: loyalty, risk, and the shadows of corruption hover over the precinct.

To debunk the theory of a bookmaker connection, Conovan follows a trail toward downstate gun-for-hire crews, known in the underworld as “lobos.” The clues lead to cabaret singer Lili, Gloria DeHaven, whose ex-boyfriend Turk Kingby, Richard Benedict, has reportedly pulled off a string of robberies with his partner Lafe Douque, William Haade. The primary informant, Sleeper, Norman Lloyd, is brutally murdered for tipping off Conovan, a brutal reminder of how dangerous this path has become. Conovan manages to corner Lafe and place him under arrest, yet a deadly turn awaits: as he leaves Douque’s apartment, gunfire erupts and Lafe dies in the street.
