Lieutenant Mike Conovan, Van Johnson, a seasoned LAPD homicide detective, probes the murder of Ed Monigan, an older member of his precinct and former partner. The discovery that Monigan carried $1,000 in cash suggests it wasn’t a simple robbery, but raises the unsettling possibility that he was on the take. Conovan’s current partner and one-time mentor, John McIntire as Det. Fred Piper, is aging and his eyesight is failing, while rookie detective “C.C.” Gordon, Tom Drake, learns the ropes under Conovan’s steady guidance.
