Sarutobi Sasuke, Kōji Takahashi, a spy for the Sanada Clan, carries a weary heart after years of conflict and quietly longs for lasting peace in a country rebuilding after upheaval. The chronicle unfolds in the tense lull between the pivotal battles of Sekigahara in 1600 and the looming Siege of Osaka in 1614, when the Tokugawa shogunate holds strategic sway but still faces simmering resentments from samurai who have become ronin and from rival factions that remember the cost of war.

The delicate balance of power is tested when a high-ranking Tokugawa spy named Tatewaki Koriyama Eiji Okada defects from the shogun’s side and appears poised to switch allegiance to the Toyotomi, dumping the equilibrium into a new orbit of suspicion and double-dealing. Sasuke finds himself caught not only between two rival intelligence networks but also between loyalties that could ignite another brutal clash. On one side stand the Tokugawa operatives led by Sakon Takatani Tetsurō Tamba and the increasingly restless Koriyama; on the other, the Toyotomi circle steered by Shigeyuki Koremura Eitaro Ozawa and his formidable lieutenant, Takanosuke Nojiri Kei Satō.

The intrigue takes a sharp turn when Mitsuaki Inamura Rokkō Toura, another Toyotomi spy, seeks Sasuke out with urgent news. He warns that Tatewaki’s supposed treachery could spark a fresh wave of violence and destabilize any hope for a peaceful settlement. Sasuke, who has tried to stay on the fringes of political plots, is drawn into the danger not by choice but by the escalating stakes that threaten to pull his world into another cycle of bloodshed.

Mitsuaki’s plea thrusts Sasuke into a perilous journey through towns and checkpoints where whispers and warnings mingle with the everyday grind of surveillance and betrayal. In a crucial early moment, the local magistrate Genba Kuni Minoru Hodaka parades a young Christian captive as part of a grim display of power, forcing Mitsuaki to reveal his own act of betrayal in order to divert Kuni’s attention and slip through his district. The episode foreshadows the kind of moral compromises that populate Sasuke’s world and sets the tone for a narrative where truth is a moving target and every ally could become a suspect.

As the road unfolds, Sasuke encounters a beguiling woman and an older man he had previously glimpsed in town. The tension deepens when Mitsuaki is attacked outside the town walls and Sasuke springs to his aid, only to find Mitsuaki fatally wounded at an inn. The shattered alibi catapults Sasuke into a maelstrom of accusation, and he must sprint to clear his name while piecing together a larger plot that involves both sides of the conflict. The shadowy chase continues as Sasuke emerges from the room where Mitsuaki was taken, pursued and then framed once more as the killer, forcing him to navigate a maze of deception that tests both his nerve and his desire for peace.

With every step, Sasuke discovers that the frayed peace between the shogunate and Toyotomi is sustained by fragile alliances, double crosses, and a network of spies who will stop at nothing to tilt the balance in their favor. The pursuit of the truth becomes inseparable from the pursuit of Tatewaki Koriyama’s alleged plans, and Sasuke realizes that his own fate—and the possibility of enduring quiet—may hinge on whether he can uncover the real masterminds behind the murder and the defections. In the end, the journey binds Sasuke not only to the clashing factions but to a harrowing instinct: that the path to peace must be won through clarity, courage, and a willingness to face the consequences of a world where loyalty is a liquid asset and truth is a moving target.
