Rupert Bear decides to head off for a walk on the hills. With his Rupert’s Mother blessing, he sets off for a jolly trip, and along the way he runs into friends Edward Trunk and Bill Badger, who are far too busy to join in: Bill needs to look after his baby brother and Edward has to do some shopping. As Rupert climbs higher, he settles against the rough trunk of an old oak and basks in the liberating calm of the countryside. Then, quite suddenly, a rainbow cloud of butterflies—once disguised as leaves on that very oak—swirls around him and, one by one, flutters away from the leafless tree toward a rocky outcrop. Rupert, entranced, can’t help but follow the gleaming swarm.

Behind him, a large white barn owl and two black cats decide to tail him as well, adding a hint of mischief to the morning. On the rocky ledge, Rupert discovers a vibrant colony of multicoloured frogs waiting in the shadows. He makes his way into a cave tucked behind a cascading waterfall, where three signs greet him: “Frogs only beyond this point”, “Everything except frogs must be kept on a lead”, and “Guard frogs operating”. Undeterred, he slips past the frog guards and slips into a hidden palace that seems built for amphibian royalty.

Inside, he witnesses the Frog Song, a rarity that occurs only once in a few hundred years, bringing frogs of every shape and size together to perform. The chorus culminates as the Frog King and Queen rise from the water to lead the finale, and the crowd erupts in thunderous applause. Just as the performance reaches its peak, the owl—still pursuing Rupert—lunges at the royals in a bid to disrupt the moment. Rupert acts quickly, warning the frogs just in time, and the startled crowd scatters as the owl and the cats find their attack thwarted. The palace empties in an instant, the echoes of the song lingering in the air.

When the moment passes, Rupert is reminded by his mother’s call from home, and with a glow of excitement he hurries back to share his incredible discoveries with his family. The day’s wonder lingers in his voice as he recounts the journey—from the hills’ edge to the secret fortress of the frogs—and the memory of the Frog Song remains a bright, shimmering thread in his imagination.
