In 1955, during the demolition of the J. C. Wilber Building, a construction worker pries off the cornerstone and uncovers a small metal box. Inside sits a live Frog, wearing a tiny top hat and cane, who, when released, bursts into a vivid musical number. The frog is voiced by William Roberts, and the worker quickly envisions a fortune by cashing in on the amphibian’s unusual talents. He slips away from the site with the box under his arm, convinced he has found a sensational act that will make him rich.

Yet every attempt to exploit the frog fails. The creature performs only for his owner and instantly reverts to an ordinary frog the moment anyone else glimpses him. Undeterred, the man drags the frog before a talent agent, but gets kicked out as the animal’s “inability to act” becomes the punchline. Desperate, the man spends his life savings to rent an abandoned theater, planning to stage a solo showcase for the creature. The frog performs atop a high wire behind a closed curtain, while the man struggles to assemble an audience, offering the crowd a tease of spectacle with the lure of “Free Beer.” As the curtain rope gives way and the curtain is finally pulled open, the frog has again become an ordinary frog, leaving the crowd irate and pelting the man with rotten vegetables.

After these failures, the man becomes homeless, living on a park bench with the frog still singing only for him. A policeman, drawn by the nighttime song, arrests the man when the frog reappears as a non-singer, and the man is committed to a “Psychopathic” Hospital alongside the frog, who continues serenading the traumatized patient. Upon his release, the man, now gaunt and destitute, still carries the box with the frog inside. He eventually returns to the construction site where the box was first found and, with a mix of relief and defiance, dumps it into the cornerstone for the future Tregoweth Brown Building before fleeing, hoping to be free of his burden at last.

One hundred one years later, in 2056, the Brown Building is being dismantled by futuristic demolition crews. The same box with the frog is rediscovered by a modern worker who sees a potential windfall. Envisioning a cash bonanza, the worker absconds with the box and the frog, unwittingly reigniting the same cycle that began a century earlier, as the hungry desire for a marvel-on-a-box begins anew. The story ends where it began: a circular pull between a strange talent, a desperate grab for fortune, and the ever-present question of who owns the wonder.
