In the late 1990s, the story begins with the destruction and abandonment of the alien vessel known as the SDF-1 after a catastrophic crash on Earth. A decade passes, and the human race faces a renewed threat as the Zentraedi return, determined to reclaim the ship for their rulers, the enigmatic Robotech Masters. Fast-forward to 2027, when the Masters themselves descend into Earth’s solar system with a clearer aim: to retrieve the ship’s still-functional mother computer, which is being studied at the Robotech Research Center in Japan. The Masters launch a covert strike on a small human settlement, killing a key military figure, Colonel B.D. Andrews of the Army of the Southern Cross, and secretly replacing him with a clone. Their plan is simple and brutal: leverage the mother computer to coordinate a devastating defense of Earth, and then wipe out humanity.

The crisis deepens as the ASC’s initial assault on the Masters’ flagship ends in disaster. In the chaos, the Andrews clone seizes control and convinces his superiors to centralize the defense by tapping into the computer’s vast database. He begins covertly beaming data to the Masters, who respond with growing confidence and imminent threat to Earth. Suspicion blooms around the military’s secrecy, prompting a young soldier, Mark Landry, to steal a portable terminal—the MODAT 5—and seek help from his friend. He asks him to contact someone named “Eve,” setting in motion a fragile alliance across fear and uncertainty. The pursuit intensifies as Andrews’s forces close in, forcing Mark into a desperate escape. Tragically, Todd Harris dies in the process, but not before passing along the MODAT’s significance.

Mark escapes with the MODAT 5, but its true importance remains unclear to him. He uses it as a prop in an amateur film being shot by his girlfriend’s friend, Becky Becky, and the connection to Eve begins to crystallize when a music video by the holographic idol Eve prompts Mark to call in for help. Eve, the artificial intelligence of the SDF-1’s onboard computer, reveals the Masters’ plan and guides Mark toward the Robotech Research Center. In a tense confrontation, Mark engages the Andrews clone in a mecha battle within the center and wins, though not without exposing Kelly Kelly and her film footage to the danger. Escaping the clash, Mark tries to warn Becky, but the recent strain in their relationship complicates the effort, and Becky’s trust isn’t easily won again.

As the threat escalates, ASC forces under the command of Rolf Emerson Rolf Emerson stage another attack on the Masters’ fleet. Yet once more they fail because Andrews uses the mother computer to feed the Masters false data, throwing their movements off and buying Earth time. A technician’s warning to Professor Embry triggers a political crisis: the government orders the computer shut down, but Andrews mounts a coup, reactivates the system, and resumes the data transmission from the database, threatening to unleash it in full. The human cost rises as Kelly is killed during the chaos, and her footage of the MODAT goes missing, widening the wounds of those who believed they could salvage the situation.

With Embry racing to Alaska Base to reach a secondary terminal that might let him reclaim control, Stacy Stacy, Kelly’s roommate, joins the perilous journey, delaying the critical mission but underscoring the personal stakes involved. The Masters’ flagship finally descends to Earth and delivers a stark ultimatum to ASC, revealing the direct link between the computer and their vessel. The tide shifts when ASC identifies a potential weakness in the Masters’ defenses and exploits it to cripple the flagship. The Masters’ fleet retreats in disarray as the battle lines shift toward a more personal front.

In a climactic turn, Mark confronts Andrews once more, determined to prevent the coup from succeeding. The duel ends with Mark’s victory, the clone defeated, and his reunion with Becky feeling suddenly close again. Eve directs Mark to a prototype space fighter, capable of transforming into a robot mode, which becomes the instrument of his final stand. He soars to the airport just in time to shield Embry and Stacy from Andrews’s last-ditch assault, and in a dramatic transformation, the sky-borne fighter becomes a mighty weapon. The final confrontation unfolds with Mark overpowering Andrews, ending the clone’s threat and sealing his own bond with Becky in a hard-won victory for humanity.

In the aftermath, the Master’s force recedes, the Earth’s defense remains intact, and the fragile alliance between Mark, Eve, Becky, and the others endures. The tale blends action-packed mecha battles with a gritty political struggle, turning on intimate moments of trust, loyalty, and courage as humanity fights to protect its future from technologically superior foes.
