As Quinn Abercromby (/actor/matthew-mcconaughey), who has endured chaos before, witnesses a massive dragon emerging from a London Underground project, the ensuing panic leads to the fiery incineration of workers. Surviving the catastrophe is a miracle that comes at a cost, as his mother, Karen—the dedicated project engineer—loses her life, shielding him from the inferno. The dragon’s emergence unleashes a global disaster, awakening more dragons and throwing militaries into disarray.

Fast forward two decades, and Quinn has taken charge of a fragile community of survivors at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. Here, he strives to rebuild life among the remnants of civilization, flanked by his best friend Creedy and a young orphan named Jared, whom he mentors as a future leader of their small, resilient group. They work tirelessly to forge a sustainable future, yet their efforts are threatened by dwindling crops and rising tensions within the community. When desperation drives Eddie to steal a truck in search of food, disaster strikes: a fierce dragon attack devastates their crops, leaving them in a dire situation.

Just as despair looms over the community, salvation arrives in the form of a heavily armed American convoy led by the enigmatic Denton Van Zan. Initially skeptical of his intentions, Quinn’s interest peaks when Van Zan reveals that dragons have a significant weakness during twilight hours. With Quinn’s knowledge of the terrain, they embark on a dangerous hunt to defeat the dragon that devastated their resources.

During this mission, Van Zan introduces Quinn to Alex Jensen (/actor/christian-bale), a skilled helicopter pilot and intelligence officer, who shares vital information from her previous hunts—specifically, that a single male dragon is capable of fertilizing all the eggs of its species en masse. The revelation that this male dragon might be hiding in London adds urgency to their mission. Compelled by his haunting memories, Quinn fears that the very dragon that killed his mother could still be lurking, adding personal stakes to their aerial journey.

Despite Quinn’s fears about the hazards of confronting the male dragon, Van Zan spearheads the team into action, leading to conflict between them. Relentless in his quest, Van Zan mobilizes defenders from Bamburgh Castle for a perilous journey to London, where they face a brutal ambush from the male dragon, resulting in the gruesome deaths of most team members.

The threat escalates as the dragon descends upon Bamburgh Castle, causing chaotic destruction and claiming lives. Quinn swiftly organizes his comrades into an underground bunker for refuge, though they become trapped when the dragon makes another devastating assault, taking Creedy with it.

In a climactic turn of events, Van Zan and Alex manage to rescue those stranded in the bunker. Motivated to eliminate the dragon menace, Quinn passes leadership to Jared and joins forces with Van Zan and Alex to confront the beast. As they soar over London, they encounter a horde of female dragons—all of whom are being hunted by the ravenous male dragon.

In a grim twist, the male dragon devours one of its own, scattering the remaining females and leaving it vulnerable. With a meticulous strategy in mind, Van Zan leads a plan to bait the dragon into a trap using explosive crossbow bolts. While initially successful, fate takes a tragic turn when the dragon’s fiery breath ignites the first explosive, consuming Van Zan.

Regrouping and armed with the last of their explosives, Quinn and Alex lure the dragon down again, ultimately allowing Quinn to fire the final devastating shot down its throat, thus ending its reign of terror.

As the dust settles on this hard-fought victory, Quinn and Alex take significant steps in solidifying their community’s future by constructing a radio tower on a windswept hill, symbolizing hope. This towering structure stands as a testament against the backdrop of survival, an emblem that even in devastation, humanity can find pathways to rebuild. In a surprising twist, Jared returns bearing news of a group of French survivors who have established contact with their enigmatic leader.
