Manibharati, [Rahman], is a successful playback singer who lives with his possessive wife Gowri, [Geetha]. Tricked into marriage by his conniving mother-in-law, what really irks him is Gowri’s inability to deal with his rabid female fans, having been one herself. Tensions escalate until Bharati leaves home after a fight. He meets Jyoti, [Sithara], on the road, who’s escaping her abusive husband that forced her into club dancing and prostitution. Bharati and Jyoti end up traveling to Goa together, where they find themselves with no money and decide to make themselves a living working as servers at a restaurant.

Bharati gets a call from his PA back home, [Vivek], saying Gowri is ill. Unbeknownst to him, his PA was forced to call Bharati and lie to bring him home; when he visits with Jyoti, Gowri hurls profanities and won’t let her in. Bharati grows furious at this treatment of his friend and leaves, declaring that he loves Jyoti. Gowri files for divorce and informs news reporters about Jyoti, and then begins dating Guru Cricketar, [Chi. Guru Dutt], a popular cricket player who had once loved Gowri. Guru accepts Gowri’s proposal and abandons his girlfriend Yamuna, who dies by suicide at their wedding hall. Gowri’s mother and her PA feel she is unstable, and they beg Bharati to visit her in the hospital. Bharati takes Jyoti with him to Gowri’s hospital, and Jyoti realizes that Bharati and Gowri belong together. As she leaves the hospital, she sees her husband track her down to apologize, and she returns home with him. Bharati is shown moving on to his next music recording, carrying a hopeful smile and caring for his wife in the hospital. The film also features Ilaiyaraaja, [Ilaiyaraaja], appearing as himself in a kalanamalai song sequence.
