Matt Connor is a former police officer turned down-on-his-luck, heavy drinker, who struggles to rebuild his life after a series of personal and professional setbacks. Once happily married to his wife Liz, with a daughter named Becky, Matt’s world is turned upside down when his partner mysteriously disappears along with a large stash of police-impounded money. His partner, Steve, claims they were playing poker during the incident, providing Matt with an alibi, but suspicion continues to hang over Matt. As the investigation unfolds, tensions rise, and Matt is eventually dismissed from the police force, labeled a suspect in the case.
Following his police career fallout, Matt’s personal life suffers greatly. Liz files for divorce and marries Steve, while Becky goes to live with her stepfather. Matt’s life becomes consumed by alcohol and gambling, further isolating him from his family and society. His downward spiral continues until a mysterious figure, called the “Old Man,” intervenes. The Old Man’s representative, a man named Blue, informs Matt that his unpaid gambling debts have been collected, but instead of relief, Matt is drawn into a darker, more dangerous world.
Matt is coerced into becoming a hitman for the Old Man’s vigilante organization, tasked with eliminating criminals who manipulate their wealth and influence to evade justice. Despite initial reluctance, Matt begins to carry out these contracts, proving himself capable for the first few jobs. Along this path, he is introduced to Drea, a woman who later reveals she is also working for the Old Man, and who becomes Matt’s romantic interest.
Things take a dramatic turn when Matt receives an order to kill Steve. Convinced of Steve’s innocence, Matt refuses to carry out the hit and confronts the Old Man’s agents, Blue and Drea, about the assignment. He insists that Steve is a corrupt cop working with criminals, a claim that Steve himself tries to disprove by threatening Matt and manipulating evidence. The situation escalates when Steve kills an innocent priest after Matt confesses his past with Steve to the clergy, attempting to expose Steve’s treachery. Steve also frames Blue for the murder, intensifying the chaos.
In a subsequent confrontation at the priest’s funeral, the situation erupts into violence. Matt refuses to back down, especially after Steve reveals that he has kidnapped Becky, his daughter, and threatens to kill her if Matt continues to oppose him. During the standoff, Blue and Drea arrive to support Matt, leading to a fierce gunfight. Blue, tragically, is mortally wounded during the chaos, sacrificing himself to save Matt. In the climax, Matt fights Steve and eventually kills him, avenging Blue’s death and bringing justice to his personal vendettas.
In the aftermath, Matt and Becky are reunited and shown developing a stronger bond, symbolizing a hope for redemption and healing. The story closes with Matt praying in a church, reflecting on his journey and the cost of his choices. Drea enters, handing him a new assignment from the Old Man, hinting that Matt’s turbulent path is far from over, and leaving the audience with a sense of ongoing struggle between morality and the harsh realities of his world.
