Pies and Guys 1958

In this third Stooge adaptation of Shaw’s Pygmalion, the Stooges (Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Joe Besser) slip into the roles of repairmen who stumble into a wager between two psychologists, Prof. Quackenbush and Sedletz. Quackenbush is convinced he can turn these rough-and-tumble workers into gentlemen through environmental conditioning, and the bet hinges on how well the trio can absorb etiquette, manners, and social polish under his guidance. The process is methodical, patient, and at times exhausting, as the professor tirelessly tries to mold their conduct, speech, and demeanor into something more refined.

During the training, the Stooges find themselves drawn to the professor’s assistant, while gradually adopting elements of refinement—especially at the dining table where proper etiquette becomes a focal point. The transformation is a slow burn, with small, comic adjustments surfacing as the trio imitates hosts, learns table manners, and attempts polite conversation, all while their natural mischief keeps clashing with the lessons.

The test comes at a lavish society party, where the students’ progress will determine the wager’s outcome. The party quickly becomes a stage for chaos as expectations collide with the trio’s signature hijinks.

The mayhem erupts when Joe greets the Countess Spritzwasser by biting off the diamond from her ring, a reckless move that sets off a cascade of mishaps. Moe and Larry pull Joe aside to correct him, only to discover that he has pilfered a trove of silverware, complicating matters further. The situation intensifies as Joe attempts to down an entire pie in one gulp, prompting a desperate intervention from Moe and triggering a domino effect that culminates with the pie sticking to the ceiling. The arrival of Mrs. Smythe-Smythe, a distinguished guest, adds pressure and leads to a comic misunderstanding as Moe tries to dodge her scrutiny. What follows is a chain reaction that sweeps everyone into a chaotic pie melee, turning the party into a swirling mix of laughter, confusion, and farce.

Amid the mayhem, the film maintains a light, playful tone while tracking the Stooges’ evolving attempts at civility. The experiments with etiquette test whether environment alone can reshape ingrained habits, or if the trio’s irrepressible humor will always chip away at progress.
