The Stooges, Larry Fine, Moe Howard, and Shemp Howard find themselves in a tight spot when their landlady, Mrs. MacGruder Kitty McHugh, threatens eviction over unpaid rent. In a bid to make amends, they offer to repaint her apartment, hoping a fresh look will smooth things over. But their well-meaning efforts go awry, and in the process of trying to spruce things up they accidentally damage her furnishings, complicating the situation further.

Fortune suddenly shifts when Shemp learns that his wealthy Uncle Phineas Bowman’s Emil Sitka imminent visit could make him the sole heir to a six million dollar fortune. With this revelation, the mood lightens and Mrs. MacGruder relaxes her rule, allowing the Stooges to stay a while longer as they ride the wave of possible riches.

Amid the domestic chaos, Shemp encounters the attractive new neighbor, Gertie Dugan Danni Sue Nolan, while he’s busy with an Upside Down Cake. He quickly discovers that she is married to Rocky Duggan Mickey Simpson, a formidable strongman famed for tearing telephone books. A string of mishaps ensues as the trio tries to keep Mrs. Duggan out of sight, especially when Rocky returns and grows furious at finding her in their apartment.

Mrs. MacGruder steps in at one tense moment, physically challenging Rocky and asserting her authority over the situation. In the midst of the upheaval, it’s revealed that Uncle Phineas and Mrs. MacGruder share a romantic past, leading to a reconciliation and a decision to marry.

In the end, the Stooges are left without the anticipated inheritance, and Rocky is left toothless after a confrontation with Mrs. MacGruder. As Rocky pursues them in retaliation, Uncle Phineas is knocked down and kicked by Mrs. Duggan, leaving him semi-conscious. Yet as the dust settles, MacGruder offers a warm, compassionate embrace to Phineas, signaling a desire for a calm and undisturbed visit ahead.
